Rename default branches to “main”?
For the longest time, the default branch in most Git repositories was named "master". Fortunately, many people have become aware that this terminology (even more evident in "master/slave") should be replaced! The tech industry should move to a more inclusive, open culture - and removing language like "master/slave" is an important step in this journey. (source)
The default branch in most Software Heritage repositories is currently master
. Meanwhile, newly created Git repositories will get a default branch of main
unless configured differently.
Should we rename the default branch in all Software Heritage repository to main?
We could also default keep master as default. We would need to make it clear in the documentation and change a setting in GitLab configuration.
