Failing to download git-bare archive: connection closed prematurely

As discussed at https://issues.guix.gnu.org/62656, attempts to download a git-bare archive fail, with the server repeatedly closing the connection prematurely:

It doesn't seem to be a rate-limiting issue. Any idea what might be going wrong?
