[2025 Roadmap - Multilingualism] Content accessibility to Open Science key resources in different languages
https://hedgedoc.softwareheritage.org/2025-outreach-roadmap?both#
- Lead: @sgranger
- Tags: outreach, guidance, knowledge management
- Priority: normal
- Note: the aim is to adopt a systematic approach. However, depending on the current partnerships, some efforts will be made to offer translations in languages such as Japanese. The focus is on Open Science.
Stakes and goals
- Ensuring better adoption of the products by translating key documents in different languages
- Disseminating the translated resources may be helpful to reach new end-users and new communities
- identify neighboring communities in advance: potential participants and channels to promote the outputs ; create joint ventures ; ask for some feedbacks from the ambassadors and the team
- This milestone is motivated by the international scope of the SWH community and by the Unesco policy
- Automated tools provide fast results but experience showed that a manual curation is still needed
- Collaborative translation methods have a greater chance to lead to adoption, as the translators become the champion of the content
Challenges
- Identifying the high-priority resources in the field of open science: a corpus should be defined ; cf. Scientific Python. (2024). Scientific Python Translations—Frequently Asked Questions. https://scientific-python-translations.github.io/faq/
- Disseminating the translated resources with accurate tooling: e.g., for the moment, it's difficult to manage different languages on the website
- Keep the translated materials up to date
